‘You Guest It’ is another return of Mr Pane (although he arguably never went away). Full of wit, charm and London appeal, ‘You Guest It’ calls in the numerous favours which Mikill has collected from his high profile friends. This EP is the musical manifestation of the ideal celebrity house party. Mikill Pane certainly uses his home grown roots to maximum effect, but the growth and evolution witnessed within this release marks the experience gained from touring with Ed Sheeran, Rizzle Kicks and many others. More than anything however, the record offers listeners a reason to view Mikill Pane as no longer ‘that guy who featured on…’ but rather the opposite. This is the start of Pane’s breakthrough on to the musical A list, and it is certainly exciting to witness.
As always Pane supplies rhymes which are packed full of double meaning alongside a quirky British twist. The consistently unconventional Paloma Faith’s appearance on Heart & Sole is refreshing following more conventional tracks featuring Example and Ed Sheeran. The run away track of the EP in my opinion however is Paper Princes featuring Yasmin. Paper Princess is filled with nostalgic sound and intelligent lyrical content. It pulls on the heart strings and is as emotionally relevant as Pane’s reworking of ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ by Gotye. The closing tracks Hey Baby and Taking Hold on the ‘You Guest It’ EP show Mikill’s talent to collaborate and create hooks which you will never forget. ‘I’m not your baby, I’m not your man’ will be looping through the dark realms of your subconscious for weeks on end.
It is always a pleasure to see British music closing the gap on the American scene. Mikill Pane is at the forefront of this. The ‘You Guest It’ EP is one which many people will undoubtedly be playing repeatedly for a long time to come. Much like the ‘Happy Birthday’ EP by Tinie Tempah, it has the power to breakthrough on to the mass market with ease. The fact that SB.TV released it however only goes on further prove Pane’s potential and the promise many see within his talent.
